Travara’s soon to launch sustainable travel writing (and publishing) course, Pitch-to-Publication is coming soon!
What is a sustainable travel writing course?
Perfect for aspiring writers as well as established travel writers, the course is a unique, four part program that teaches the nuts and bolts of travel writing; an introduction to sustainable and responsible tourism, and why low-carbon travel coverage is important; detailed instructions on how to pitch and write for Travara (or any other publication); and a beginning-to-end, pitching to publication guided experience with feedback.
Upon completion of the course, you are guaranteed to walk away with up to three published articles, giving you a much-needed byline and portfolio from an award-winning media platform to jumpstart your sustainable travel writing career!

Travel Writing 101
Travel writing can open many doors and provide opportunities and access you might not otherwise have. Whether it’s a full-time career, a side gig or something you just do occasionally, we’ll teach you the ins and outs of the business so you understand the world of travel writing. Once you understand how it works, you can begin building relationships and creating your dream job, traveling the world in order to share impactful stories.

Sustainable Travel Writing
Traveling during a climate crisis (which we are in), definitely creates conflicting feelings about travel. Travel, when done responsibly, creates many economic benefits in areas that need it most, but on the flip side, travel also contributes to climate change with carbon emissions, overtourism, and irresponsible choices.
Learning the fundamentals of responsible, regenerative, conscious, green, eco-friendly, sustainable tourism (or insert another buzzword here) will allow you to recognize what kind of travel does the most good (low-carbon, local), rather than the most harm. Once you understand the ethics behind what kind of travel to promote, travel writing gives you a platform to encourage responsible, sustainable travel, positively impacting thousands of people’s lives for the better.
Navigating Editorial Guidelines + Writing
Once you understand the inner workings of travel journalism, have a good base understanding of sustainable tourism, we’ll teach you how to navigate editorial guidelines to set you up for success when pitching, writing, optimizing and submitting articles. We’ll use Travara’s editorial guidelines, but the skills you learn will be applicable to any media outlet you pitch in the future.

From Pitch-to-Publication
The final part of the course allows you to put everything you’ve learned into practice. By this point, you’ve learned where to source ideas that promote sustainable travel, while minimizing carbon emissions. You’ve learned what kinds of hotels, tour operators, and businesses to promote. You’ve learned where to find them. You’ve learned how to find the story angle within the destination. And you’ve learned how to pitch.
You’ll have the opportunity to pitch Travara editors up to 3 story ideas and work through the entire process, from pitch to publication. If you follow the guidelines and utilize everything you’ve learned throughout the course, your pitches *should be* rock solid, providing you up to three published articles that you can use to create a portfolio and jumpstart your travel writing career!
